SEOUL (September 5, 2017) — BLH Aqua Technology’s Founder and CEO, Edward Hong, committed the company to support the Ten Principles of the UN Global compact along with a dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where there may be a clear impact. As a young company dedicated to developing water efficiency enhancement technologies, there is much potential to impact the environment in a globally responsible way, and supporting the SDGs and Global Compact clearly defines those goals and necessary steps to create a culture of respect and integrity and also pave the way for long-term success.
As a member of UN Global compact, BLH is fully committed to the Ten Principles. Additionally, the key SDGs that BLH and their water efficiency technology can clearly support are further defined with respect to BLH’s commercial products, technology, and business plan.
The Ten Principles are broken into four categories: Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-corruption. These help to define the basic or minimum requirements that a responsible company should uphold.
– Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
– Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
– Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
– Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
– Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
– Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
– Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
– Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
– Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
– Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals are 17 separate goals detailing a specific issue that like-minded groups or citizens can work towards. In some cases, such as with BLH, a company may choose to tackle various goals or be able to introduce a product or idea which works towards multiple goals.
#2 Zero Hunger
BLH’s first commercially available product, Aqutonix, aims to increase crop growth and yield in an environmentally friendly way while also reducing operating costs through a reduction of water wastage and pesticide or fertilizer usage. The ability to increase a farms yield, no matter the size, has the potential to empower communities around the world to provide more with less. This is especially crucial in particularly arid areas where water resources or the ability to grow fresh food.
#6 Clean Water and Sanitation
BLH’s proprietary technology can also be applied to seawater desalinization as well as mining and wastewater treatment activities. By utilizing water more efficiently, it is possible to improve water management systems by making them cheaper and reduce their energy consumption. In agriculture, Aqutonix has a sterilization effect as well, providing cleaner water to crops and livestock for improved health.
#10 Reduced Inequalities
BLH believes that their technologies may well serve developing countries to bridge many socio-economic gaps by providing more output with less input, both in energy and in harmful or dangerous pesticides and fertilizers. By working with governments, non-profits, and non-governmental organizations innovative, sustainable, and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies can become available to the developing world and those at the bottom of the pyramid.
#13 Climate Action
BLH Aqua Technology products utilize electricity to achieve water efficiency, which could be considered an additional toll on the planet’s energy consumption and production. However, in the case of Aqutonix, the product utilizes only 50 watts of electricity (less than the energy required for most hairdryers) and can be completely powered by the addition of a solar panel module. In addition, the benefit of BLH technology in the seawater desalinization industry aims to decrease the energy consumption by 5 – 10% per facility – facilities which utilize huge amounts of electricity. The cost savings are vital to reducing the cost of potable water for consumers, but the energy savings as well help to reduce the impact on climate change.
#14 Life Below Water
With the goal of reducing the amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used, BLH believes that Aqutonix can help to protect life below water as many of these pesticides or fertilizers end up in streams and oceans, polluting the water resources necessary for further agricultural development and of course the general support of life.
#15 Life on Land
As with SDG #14, a reduction in chemicals used on crops will further help to protect lands used for agriculture and slow the pollution. As the world’s population continues to expand, more and more land resources will be cultivated since soil pollution makes fields unable to yield crops and more is needed to satisfy the population.
#17 Partnership for the Goals
BLH promises to actively cooperate in the global partnership for sustainable development in all business areas and strives to partner with UN organizations and/or other Global Compact members to further the goals where possible.
While only some of the 17 SDGs are mentioned here, BLH Aqua Technology is committed to doing their part to develop sustainable business practices with positive effects on the world’s resources and communities and all of the sustainable development goals.
